Curriculum

At Gidea Park, our school community collaborated to devise a curriculum that is A curriculum that is engaging in catering to pupils’ interests, rigorous in its coverage of the national curriculum, and exciting for staff to teach.engaging in catering to pupils’ interests, rigorous in its coverage of the national curriculum, and exciting for staff to teach. Each topic is based around a Key Question, with humanities learning guided by a series of Big Questions. We place a strong emphasis on children communicating their learning and developing a mastery of a range of key vocabulary.

Other subject areas have been carefully planned to ensure progression, engagement and rigour: Science, Computing, PE, French and RE are taught as standalone subjects, while our Arts curriculum focuses on teaching core skills in Art, DT and Music over the course of the year, skills which can then be applied in children’s topic work.

In Maths, we follow the White Rose scheme to structure our planning, although teachers make use of a wide range of resources to create bespoke learning programmes for the children. Children in Year 5-6 are taught maths in sets to further target areas of need.

Children are also taught the fundamentals of phonics, spelling, punctuation and grammar, and how to apply these with confidence and creativity to produce engaging and thoughtful pieces of writing.
