Maths at Gidea Park
At Gidea Park we are working with our local Maths Hub to be a 'teaching for mastery' school. This approach aims to build understanding and enjoyment of maths in all pupils, building their ability to reason and make connections in their thinking. For more information you can visit the website of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).
Curriculum
The school follows the structure of the White Rose Maths Curriculum, using this as a basis to develop rigorous, challenging lessons that are well-tailored to the needs of our pupils. The school uses materials from White Rose, NCETM and more to develop a bespoke and ever-changing curriculum matched closely to the ever-changing needs of our learners.
Number Facts
Essential number facts such as number bonds and times tables are taught throughout the school as needed. Programmes Numbots and Times Tables Rockstars are used at school and at home to facilitate practice, and pupils work towards Times Tables Badges in school to mark their progress and achievement.
Parental Support
One of the most important things parents can do is encourage. Maths can hold a stigma for some, and parents often claim they 'didn't get' maths or just are 'not good at it'. We want to encourage all our pupils that maths is for them and build a positive, resilient, can-do attitude. In terms of specifics, regular practice of number bonds and times tables is of huge benefit throughout children's time at school. As children progress through KS2, they will also be given an increasing amount of maths homework, so creating a routine and expectation around this is essential.
