Exercise not only changes your body, it changes your mind, your attitude and your mood.

Statement

At Gidea Park Primary School we are committed to providing a high quality of PE, sport and physical activity to all pupils. We aim to provide opportunities to participate in a variety of physical activities which supports their health and fitness whilst helping to embed core values such as teamwork, determination and respect.

Curriculum

All children participate in two hours of physical activity a week, which consists of either indoor or outdoor lessons. The curriculum is taught through various sports such as dance, gymnastics, football, athletics, netball, hockey, OAA (outdoor adventurous activities), rounders and leadership. Yoga, multi-skills and a range of invasion games are taught in KS1 to teach children the fundamental skills they will need as they progress through the school.

As a school we recognise the value of developing pupils’ leadership skills. Pupils are given opportunities to be playground leaders and run clubs to encourage children to be active during lunchtimes. Children in Year 5 take part in a sequence of lessons which cultivate characteristics that make a good leader.

 Swimming

In Year 4, all pupils are assessed to determine their ability to meet the criteria as outlined in the National Curriculum. Those in need of additional teaching are then provided with weekly lessons from qualified instructors, aiming to learn to swim a variety of different strokes over a distance of 25 metres. Our close proximity to Romford allows us to use the facilities at Sapphire Ice & Leisure Centre, which we can reach by taking a brisk walk through the lovely local park.

Clubs

The children at Gidea Park have access to a wide range of extra-curricular activities that are facilitated both by qualified coaches and by members of staff who are passionate about sport. Across the year, these include football, netball, athletics, cricket, rounders, tennis, dance and karate. Up to date information can be found on or Clubs page.

Competitive Sport

As members of the Havering Sports Collective we have taken advantage of the expansive variety of competitions and festivals that they provide throughout the year, more details of which can be found on our Sports page. We also arrange friendly matches in football and netball against local schools. In addition, all of our pupils have the opportunity to take part in competitive activity at school through our regular intra-school House Competitions.

School Games Mark

The School Games Mark is a government-led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. We were most recently awarded a Silver in 2023, and are working towards earning Gold.

Sports Premium

Schools are awarded an annual 'PE and Sports Premium', funds which are used to:

  • make additional and sustainable improvements to the PE, sport and physical activity they provide
  • provide or improve equal access to sport for boys and girls
  • ensure teachers have the relevant skills and knowledge to confidently teach PE in a structured way, prioritising continued professional development (CPD) and training where needed

A full, annual breakdown of how this money has been spent can be found below; for the past few years, the school has carried forward the majority of this money with the intention of using it for a large-scale project to improve sports facilities at the school.
