At Gidea Park Primary School we teach learners how to read through the Read Write Inc Phonics scheme. This is a systematic and dynamic literacy programme rooted in phonics that is designed to give every child the best start to their English education.

Read Write Inc Phonics combines five key themes to ensure that our learners succeed:

  • high quality teaching
  • a whole- school approach
  • effective assessment and grouping
  • whole school training
  • ensuring parents are kept involved

Our aim is to create learners who are fluent, enthusiastic readers. All children will remain part of the programme until they are confident readers.  As well as learning to read books within the Read Write Inc scheme, children will continue to read books from other schemes listed below so that they can experience a range of book types.

 Other Reading Schemes

At Gidea Park Primary School we use a range of other Reading Schemes to teach reading skills and promote a love of books. During your child's time at our school they will learn to decode words using their growing phonological knowledge and start to read structured books which develop their language skills and understanding of the text. Guidance for parents can be found in the Parent Room on Fronter.

Across KS1 children are given books from the schemes to read at home.  The books are banded into colours based on what stage a child as it within their reading journey.  For further information about the order of the colours please click on the link below.
